Dining Room Decorating Tips
● Decide on a theme for your dining room to guide your choices in silverware,
decor, and fabric. Whether it’s modern, classic or Victorian, execute your theme
to have a cohisive look.
● Neutral Colors can enhance the look of your dining room. Blend neutrals together for a monochrome look.
Add indoor plants and natural textures to complement warm wood or upholstered seating and create
a balanced atmosphere. White walls make the room feel airy and spacious.
● Other than neutral colors, consider white walls. For example eggshell,
alabaster or ivory. These shades of while make the room feel airy and spacious.
● Match the color of your walls and the furiture. White walls and blue
upholstery match, wooden furniture and eggwhite walls match. Make sure that your
color of the dining set and other furnishings compliment each other including
the walls.
● In choosing a wall decor, decide on the mood you want to create. Is your
dining room going for formal elegance or a more casual, eclectic vibe? Stick to
a few neutral pieces if you prefer sophistication, but don’t overwhelm your
guests. Consider the existing color scheme in your dining room when selecting a
painting or any other artwork for your wall.
●
If you are the unconventional, quirky type, and want to be different. Mix
materials in your dining room. Combine different styles and colors of chairs and
table. Combine different materials like a wooden table with painted upholstered
chairs, to add variety.
● If you choose to place a rug under the table, make sure it’s large enough. The
rug should extend beyond the chairs when they’re pulled out to avoid a cramped
feeling.
● The art work in your dining room should be proportionate to the size of
your dining room. First, consider the areas or surfaces you want to fill with a
picture, painting or any artwork. Scale matters—choose large artworks for
spacious walls and smaller pieces for more compact spaces. Remember, art doesn’t
have to be gigantic; it can make a statement without overwhelming the viewer.
● Do not buy oversized dining set. Before you buy you dining room set,
take a good look at your space. Be sure that there is ample room to walk around the dining set
even if all the seats are occupied. Interior design has a lot to do with ergonometrics,
not just appearance. We Filipinos have the tendency to buy bigger dining sets
than our space can accommodate and push one side of the table against the wall.
● Highlight Architectural Details: If your dining room has beautiful
moldings, brick walls, or wooden beams, use them to your advantage. Custom trim
painted in the same color as the walls adds texture and visual interest.
● If you plan to put a chandelier above your dinning table, don't put it up so high. Lower it 3 to 4 feet from the table top.
● Aside from your direct light source above the dining table (a chandelier for example), add
ambient lighting like adding some pin lights around the room and
a dimmer switch to make your surroundings more pleasing to the eye. Do the same with your living room.
● Embrace natural elements like whitewashed wood paneling with exposed concrete
for a modern yet inviting feel. Add plants for a fresh touch. Remember, your
dining area doesn’t need to be lavish—just thoughtful and welcoming.
●
Be careful not to over decorate! Leave empty spaces on your walls and
floor. Imagine being a guest in dining room full of furniture, wall decorations
and people. Add-in all the diner wares like chafing dishes, plates and utensis.
It will be overwhelming specially in a small dining area. Leave breathing
spaces! Make your dining room bright, airy, pleasant and inviting!
